Defending WHL champs blank the Giants

EDMONTON, AB (NEWS1130) – The Edmonton Oil Kings scored three times in the third period to finish off the Vancouver Giants 5-0 in front of almost 9,000 fans. Delta’s Tristan Jarry had the shutout for the Oil Kings, making 24 saves.
Cody Corbett opened the scoring on the power play near the two-minute mark of the first period for Edmonton.
The Oil Kings made it 2-0 on Stephane Legault’s marker with five and a half minutes left in the middle period.
Jared Rathjen made his debut in goal for the Giants and had 24 saves in the first 40 minutes as the Ed Chynoweth Cup winners were up 2-0 after two periods.
The 18-year-old goalie was acquired by Vancouver from the Victoria Royals for an eighth-round pick in the 2013 bantam draft earlier in the week. He had been playing in the Alberta Junior “A” league for Whitecourt.
The Oil Kings scored three times in the final period to end the scoring. Legault and Dylan Wruck each finished with a goal and an assist for the winners.
It was the second time that Jarry had been in goal for the Oil Kings in a win over the Giants this season.
Vancouver’s third game of a five-game Alberta road trip is Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Calgary.
