Happy Birthday Dal Richards

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Legendary Vancouver bandleader Dal Richards celebrated his 95th birthday at Robson Square this afternoon. For this BC cultural fixture, age is just a number. “You know the older I get, the better it gets,” Richards tells News1130.

Breakfast Television’s Dawn Chubai kicked off the party with her rendition of Happy Birthday. Chubai has been a jazz vocalist with “Dal’s Gals” for the last four years.

At the massive celebration, Richards sang, danced and ate cake with his fans. He was also named Hepcat Laureate by the provincial government.

“Would you believe it? All these accolades? I sure do appreciate it and I sure do enjoy being here to receive it,” says Richards.

Born in 1918, he started his career in 1940. He’s become a staple at the PNE, playing the fair every summer.

This weekend, Richards will perform at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on Sunday.
