Robertson asks for staff report on saving Waldorf

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver’s mayor is looking into options for the Waldorf Hotel.
He has asked the city manager to bring a report to council on protecting the venue. Robertson also says he will ask staff to meet with Waldorf Productions to talk about options for another arts and culture venue in the city, including the possibility of it continuing at the same site.
“The Waldorf is both a significant cultural amenity and a major neighbourhood asset, one that resonates with people of all ages throughout Vancouver,” says Robertson in a statement.
“To lose such a historic building would be a big blow, which is why we need to do what we can to protect it – we need to be building up Vancouver’s arts and culture. I want to ensure the Waldorf Hotel is protected and that we don’t lose a valuable live performance venue.”
City Councillor Heather Deal says they’ll be working towards two things. “Stopping any possible demolition permit. There has not been one applied for yet. But if one comes forward we are going to hold off on one until we do a heritage statement of significance.”
There has been a lot of backlash over news that the venue is set to close on January 20th.
Solterra Group, which has bought the Waldorf Hotel, says it has no intention of demolishing the hotel at this point.
