Tracking big rigs is helping with flow of cargo

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – A GPS tracking program for big rigs driving in the Lower Mainland seems to be helping to clear up congestion and streamline the flow of cargo.
About 300 trucks were outfitted with GPS systems last February in a pilot project aimed at, among other things, reducing the number of container trucks on the road.
Port Metro Vancouver says there have been results in scheduling, tracking and improving routes, turnaround times, and making sure fewer trucks leave terminals empty.
The idea is maximize loads and minimize the time containers spend on the dock. One benefit is fewer drivers trying to use non-truck routes like Nanaimo Street.
The Port tells the Vancouver Sun there are plans to expand the program, which is free for registered truckers, to 1,000 rigs in the next few months and eventually all trucks licensed to do business with the Port.
