Auditor general ready to hold local governments accountable

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The province has introduced the woman who will hold municipal politicians and their projects accountable to the public.
It’s day three on the job for BC’s new Auditor General for Local Government, Basia Ruta, who’s gained most of her experience in Ottawa.
“Taxpayers want to be confident they’re getting value for their tax dollars at every level, including at the local government level,” she says.
The AG for local government will be replaced every five years.
“My work has been focused on accomplishing at the federal level the same thing British Columbia’s local governments are trying to accomplish, a living value for tax dollars. I am pleased and excited to bring the skills and experience I have gained over the past 30 years,” she adds.
It’s a position that’s long been called for by mayors like Surrey’s Dianne Watts, as well as several Chambers of Commerce.
