NHL
The Vancouver Canucks cut their roster down to the league-mandated 23 players today. Eight players were sent to the Chicago Wolves farm team including defenceman Kevin Connauton. Defenceman Frank Corrado was sent back to Kitchener Rangers of the OHL.
The Canucks open up the regular season tomorrow night at home to the Anaheim Ducks (7 p.m.) and will host the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night. (6 p.m.) Vancouver split its four meetings with the Ducks last season. The Canucks won five of their game games against the Oilers in 2011-12.
WHL
There’s Western Hockey League action at the Coliseum with the Vancouver Giants hosting the Victoria Royals at 7:30 p.m. The Giants (12-33-0-0) are coming off a 9-5 loss to the Tri-City Americans Wednesday for their fifth loss in six games while Victoria (23-17-1-2) swept a two-game set with Kamloops in Victoria Tuesday and Wednesday and have won three straight games.
Tonight is Dash for Cash night. 15,000 frozen loonies will be spread across centre ice, and the contestants will have 60 seconds to pick up as many as possible. The Giants visit Kelowna tomorrow before travelling home for a Sunday afternoon game (4 p.m.) against Everett.
AHL
The Abbotsford Heat complete their season-long eight-game American Hockey League homestand hosting the Milwaukee Admirals at the Abbotsford Sports and Entertainment Centre this Saturday night (7 pm.) and Sunday afternoon (4 p.m.)
Following Sunday’s “Faith Night” game the Heat will host a post-game get together with team members Ben Walter, Tyler Ruegsegger, Zach McKelvie, and President Ryan Walter.
BCHL
Local action in the BC Hockey League tonight has the Coquitlam Express home to the Langley Rivermen while the Surrey Eagles host the West Kelowna Warriors. Both games are 7 p.m. starts.
Canadian Masters Squash
The Vancouver Racquets Club hosts “The Canadian Masters Team Championships” which features players from across Canada from today until Sunday. The annual event features fifty-six players representing six provinces and one territory. First matches are at 3 p.m. today at the Vancouver Racquets Club at 4867 Ontario Street.
