Lineups shouldn’t be a problem at faregates

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’ll be a matter of months before we’ll be going through faregates to get onto SkyTrain and the Canada Line.
TransLink assures us the gates won’t slow commuters down as they rush to the trains.
The transit authority’s Derek Zabel says they’ve been studying the flow of commuters and are confident up to 40 people will be able to move through one gate per minute.
“The gates are uni-directional. We will have people monitoring the gates. So if there are a lot of people congregating at a particular station, we’ll be able to change the direction of those gates,” explains Zabel.
He stresses the gates will be activated by a mere tap of your Compass card – no need to feed a Faresaver and wait for a receipt to be spit out.
And unlike the nightmare of getting luggage and bikes through turnstiles, he says commuters with large items should encounter no problems.
“We have what we call accessible gates for people in wheelchairs, bikes or luggage. They will be wider.”
Some faregates will be activated for a test period at the end of summer. The whole system will go online sometime in the fall.
