Canucks open road trip with win over Ducks

ANAHEIM, CA (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Canucks scored three powerplay goals as they earned a 5-0 victory over the Anaheim Ducks to open up a three-game swing through California. Mason Raymond had two goals.
The Canucks were given a golden opportunity to open the scoring when Ryan Getzlaf was sent off for cross-checking with 1:29 still remaining in a Daniel Winnik penalty. With both players still in the box, Daniel Sedin finished off a cross-crease pass from his brother Henrik to make it 1-0.
The Canucks added a second powerplay goal in the first period when Raymond batted in his first of the night with 1:20 left in the opening frame.
Fourth-liner Aaron Volpatti pulled within an assist of the Gordie Howe hat-trick late in the second period. After participating in a spirited fight with Anaheim’s Matt Belesky in the first period, Volpatti stole the puck in the slot and beat Jonas Hiller five-hole to make it 3-0 for Vancouver.
The Canucks wrapped up the victory with a powerplay marker from Zack Kassian early in the third period and then Raymond’s second goal of the game with five minutes to go. Rookie Jordan Schroeder earned an assist on the Raymond goal to give him his first career NHL point.
Cory Schneider sparkled in goal for Vancouver, stopping all 30 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season and fifth of his career. Schneider had to make a number of tough stops early in the first period before his teammates got going offensively.
The Canucks (2-1-1) have now won two games in a row. They’ll take on the San Jose Sharks on Sunday before wrapping up their trip against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday.
