Stabbing at Vancouver apartment raising safety concerns

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The random attack and stabbing of seven people in a West End apartment earlier this week might have apartment dwellers on edge.
A security expert says tenants can do their part to keep their buildings safe.
“It’s really up to the residents of the apartment. It’s behavioural things. It’s things like not letting in strangers. It’s things like only buzzing in people that you know,” says Leo Knight with Paladin Security.
He advises tenants to be aware of their surroundings and keeping headphones off whenever they can.
“Most people typically walk around with their iPods going. They’re depriving themselves of one of their senses – their hearing.”
Newer condos will have built-in security features, like access cards that prevent people from wandering to certain floors, and cameras wired throughout the building.
Police don’t believe last Thursday’s stabbing was a security issue, as the suspect was visiting a friend in the building.
