Blizzard blasts into Newfoundland

HALIFAX (NEWS1130) – A winter storm storm that hammered the Maritimes on Saturday is now swirling east across Newfoundland bringing high winds and heaps of snow.
Environment Canada metereologist Jeremy March says central Newfoundland has already been hit with 33 centimetres of snow, and can expect up to another 20 cm as snow continues to blow in.
St. John’s is digging out from 23 cm of snow that fell Sunday morning, an amount that could double as the storm cuts to the island’s east coast before breaking up after midnight.
Wind gusts of more than 100 kilometres an hour are expected to pummel the country’s easternmost province after ripping through parts of the Maritimes Saturday.
March says the system is a fusion of an Alberta clipper that dumped up to 40 cm of snow in southern Ontario on Friday and a low pressure system that moved up the eastern seaboard.
Several departures and arrivals have already been cancelled at St. John’s International Airport while Marine Atlantic has suspended ferry service between North Sydney, Nova Scotia, and Port aux Basques, NL.
