Canada Post weighing cuts to address operating loss

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Big changes could be coming to Canada Post.
The Crown corporation is looking at big cuts as it deals with a crushing $327-million operating loss.
Possible cost-cutting moves include cutting home delivery down to four or even three days a week, consolidating sorting centres to just major cities, and closing some retail outlets.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says that is the exact opposite of what it has been calling for.
“We’ve been encouraging Canada Post to look at growth, such as banking and parcels. If cuts to service do happen, which aren’t good for anyone, we will fight those cuts,” says Gayle Bossenberry with CUP-W.
She hopes layoffs aren’t part of the company’s plans, either.
“We have job security in our collective agreement and certainly, there may be job loss by attrition, which we’re facing now but it’s something we would have to work through.”
Service or job cuts are not likely to happen until 2016.
