Students voting on whether to keep U-Pass

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Post-secondary students are deciding whether to stay with the TransLink U-Pass program.
Students currently pay $30 a month to cover U-Pass costs. The U-Pass enables students to use any TransLink mode of transportation in all zones.
But fees will be creeping up over the next two years. The U-Pass will cost $38 a month in 2015.
Mike Hanson with the BCIT Student Association says everyone has a chance to vote on whether to stay in the program, since all students pay the U-Pass fee.
“Students who drive to school don’t necessarily use public transit everyday. Sometimes they object to having to pay. They see it as a waste of money,” he explains.
The U-Pass fee is about a third of the cost of a regular monthly one zone pass.
“The pass is definitely cheaper than a normal pass. But it’s not for everyone, and that’s why we’re bringing this to a referendum.”
Students at UBC and VCC have already voted overwhelmingly to stay with the U-Passes.
