Package on Parliament Hill deemed non-hazardous

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – Some tense moments on Parliament Hill this afternoon.

A package was found outside the Centre Block which is home to the House of Commons and MPs’ offices.

Haz-mat crews examined the package and found it to be non-hazardous.

“Just been advised the package was deemed to be negative,” RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Lucy Shorey said in an email. “We cannot comment further on this matter as it is currently under investigation.”

While the situation was unfolding a number of Parliament Hill security guards and RCMP officers that came in contact with the package were isolated as a precaution.

The incident follows another package left this week in a downtown Ottawa building housing the offices of the Public Safety Department.
