Report suggests governance issues within TransLink

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There seems to be a problem with TransLink‘s governance structure, according to a new report released at a public meeting.
There is also confusion around who’s calling the shots because, essentially, the TransLink Board, the Mayors Council and the Commissioner are all in charge.
Consultant Ken Cameron was part of a panel that looked at how transit systems are handled in Brisbane, London, Stockholm and Vienna and found in each city, an elected group is able to handle everything
They also got feedback from 15 people who were associated with TransLink in the past and they found one main problem, it is not clear who runs the transit authority.
“There needs to be clarity of the purpose of each of the entities and they need to have the power to make decisions and be accountable for those decisions.”
Some mayors are concerned if Metro Vancouver adopts that model that the taxpayer would be on the hook to fund even more projects.
“The challenge for us to define what we want, different than what we have; what the pros and cons of that will be and then what we recommend forward to the government of the day,” says Langley Mayor Peter Fassbender.
A more in-depth report and feedback from the Mayors’ Council will be presented by mid-March.
