Avalanche risk skyrocketing this weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Local mountain conditions haven’t been this bad in 20 years.
North Shore Rescue is warning you about the severe avalanche risk this weekend.
“People should really heed this warning. We may not be able to get in and rescue people that venture out of the controlled areas or into the backcountry. This includes the snowshoeing community too,” says Tim Jones with North Shore Rescue.
Earlier, crews were concerned they would trigger an avalanche when they were called to a report of a missing skier who had gone off the trail on Hollyburn Mountain.
NSR located the woman and took her out of the area on a snowmobile.
She was well prepared and had a helmet, water and food, along with a phone.
Jones says others may not be so lucky. “They need to be very responsible because we’re seeing a huge influx going into the backcountry areas, very unaware of the dangers.”
But it’s not just the north shore experiencing bad weather.
Coquitlam Search and Rescue also says avalanche risk is high there…areas include Burke Mountain and Eagle Ridge.
Drive BC has a heavy snowfall warning up for the Coquihalla Highway.
