How you fight a traffic ticket could soon change

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Dodging a traffic ticket by challenging it and hoping the officer who wrote you up doesn’t show in court could soon be a thing of the past.
The provincial justice reform report released yesterday to address delays and rising costs in the system includes changes to the ways traffic tickets are issued, paid for and disputed.
The justice ministry wants to see most disputes go before an administrative tribunal, challenges could be dealt with online and over the phone within 90 days instead of the months and months it currently takes.
Officers would also start using electronic hand-held ticketing devices.
The idea is to speed up the process, free up dozens of officers, justices and court staff, streamline the system and save anywhere from $8-11 million.
The traffic tribunal would be made up of an independent review board.
The Vancouver Sun reports the changes could be made within two years.
