Clergyman speaks about choosing a pope

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The College of Cardinals begins deliberations this week on who should succeed Benedict the Sixteenth.

A local clergyman answered questions about what goes into choosing the next Pope.

Monsignor Pedro Lopez-Gallo with the Archdiocese of Vancouver predicts the Cardinals will likely go with a much younger man than the 85-year-old Benedict, but he points out older popes can be agents of change too.

“John XXIII was 78 and in the four and a half years he was pope, he made a big revolution, so [in a] few years he did a lot of things.”

Among the leading hopefuls, is Quebec’s Marc Cardinal Ouellet, but Lopez-Gallo thinks College members will pick the man best suited to take the church into the future, and not just base their choice on geographic or racial considerations.
