DELTA (NEWS1130) – Some of the biggest voices in Metro Vancouver’s debate over whether a regional police force is a good idea will be having a town hall discussion in Delta tonight.
Delta’s mayor and chief of police have both said they’re against the idea.
Delta’s mayor Lois Jackson says there’s been a lot of talk about the positives and this meeting will give people a chance to hear other sides of the story. Regional police force supporters, Missing Inquiry Commissioner Wally Oppal, and Vancouver’s deputy chief of police will also attend the meeting.
SFU Criminologist Rob Gordon, who is also a supporter, expects they will have a hard time convincing mayors who have had the same concern for years.
“Somehow the municipal is going to be run by an alien police service that is controlled by the city of Vancouver. If people have that particular vision in their head, there’s no shaking it,” he says.
Delta’s mayor fears a regional police force will mean community policing will take a hit.
The meeting will be held at the Delta Town and Country Inn at 7 p.m.
