RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – Transit not tunnels!
That’s the call from a group unhappy with the options on the table to replace the aging Massey Tunnel.
Eric Doherty with the Council of Canadians says the problem with these consultations is they are not putting transit solutions out there for people to choose from.
“They’re saying you can have wider freeways in various forms or nothing, and that’s just not acceptable in this time of climate crisis where we have to be getting people out their cars and on to low carbon modes like public transit.”
Doherty says single occupancy vehicles account for 77 per cent of those using the current tunnel – a number he finds unacceptable in today’s climate.
“Those people could be on transit, and a lot of people like to be on transit, they don’t want to be stuck in traffic, they’d rather on transit, actually doing some work on their laptops.”
He hopes people will demand the government put more transit options on the table as they look at upgrades.
His group will be handing out pamphlets at today’s public consultation in Delta on the future of the tunnel.
