VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – According to projections by a UBC geographer, Caucasian people will be a distinct minority in Metro Vancouver by the year 2031.
The professor is basing his report on numbers from Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
Daniel Hiebert says his predictions give us a picture of what Metro Vancouver will look like if “the trends that we see over the last 20 years continue over the next 20 years.”
He expects ethnic groups will continue to gather together, creating neighbourhood enclaves. “Because that’s what happened between the early 1990s and the middle 2000s,” he adds.
Current trends also indicate that the areas around those enclaves will see a greater level of ethnic diversity.
The professor acknowledges that many variables can come into play, like changes in immigration policy, warfare, or housing prices, all factors that could significantly alter his predictions.
But if the trends and conditions of the last two decades continue over the next two decades, Hiebert predicts Caucasian people will account for about two-in-five people across Metro Vancouver.
