Blue Jays fall to Indians in highly-anticipated opener

By

TORONTO, ON (NEWS1130) – With more hype surrounding the team than it has seen in the past 20 years, the Toronto Blue Jays opened up their 2013 MLB season with a 4-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians at Rogers Centre.

Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey made his first career opening day start and took the loss in his Blue Jays debut.

The Indians got to Dickey in the second inning. A pair of passed balls charged to catcher J.P. Arencibia set up an RBI fielder’s choice from Lonnie Chisenhall to open the scoring. Drew Stubbs was the next batter and he hit home another run with a single in his first Indians at-bat.

The Blue Jays threatened to put up a big number in the bottom of the third as they loaded the bases with no outs. Adam Lind was able to cash in one run, but was robbed of more as Asdrubal Cabrera picked off a hot shot headed for the outfield and flipped it to second base to start a double play.

Following the Lind RBI, Cleveland pitcher Justin Masterson settled down and didn’t give the Jays many opportunities to score. He finished the game with a line of six innings pitched with one earned run allowed, five strikeouts and four walks.

Cabrera followed up his strong defensive play with a two-run homer off of Dickey in the fifth. Dickey allowed three earned runs in six innings with four strikeouts.

Melky Cabrera and Emilio Bonifacio had a hit each in their Toronto debuts, but Jose Reyes went 0-for-3 at the plate.

The Jays host the Indians again on Wednesday.
