VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s a crucial workplace skill: Checking to see whether your favourite hockey team has made a deal before the NHL trade deadline while your boss isn’t looking.
Millions of Canadians will be honing that talent before the deadline hits at noon tomorrow.
The big question here in Vancouver is whether the Canucks will finally be able to pull the trigger on a deal for goaltender Roberto Luongo.
“All eyes are obviously on Luongo, but the Canucks are looking at other players like Ryane Clowe and Derek Roy,” says Rick Dhaliwal in the News1130 Sports Centre.
“Obviously, a centreman would be nice. That’s where they’re weak and they have been all year long,” he adds.
Dhaliwal points out moving Luongo could be a challenge.
“Here’s the problem: Mikka Kiprusoff is available in Calgary and Mike Smith is available in Phoenix. They are two very good veteran goaltenders. Canucks GM Mike Gillis says he’s talking to four teams about Luongo, but with quality goalies like Kiprusoff and Smith out there, it’s going to be a little bit tougher.”
Gillis has said he’s not interested in moving draft picks or prospects for a rental player.
