Using the term ‘organic’ can be persuasive

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Can the word ‘organic’ make something taste better?

A new study out of Cornell University has found that when people were given food and told it was organic – they rated it as tasting healthier and more nutritious than the non-organic choice – even though they were actually the same snack.

Participants were also willing to pay more for the perceived organic product.

However, people were less likely to be fooled if they reported reading nutritional labels on a regular basis.

Researchers say the results show the so-called ‘health-halo’ affect words like organic and low-fat can have when marketing a product.

The study is published in the journal Food Quality and Preference.
