VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The latest look at BC’s retail sales shows more weakness even as the nationwide performance improves.
The province’s retailers rang up sales in February that were one per cent lower than a year earlier, totalling $5.1 billion, according to Statistics Canada.
It was the fifth month in a row that BC’s retailers failed to post a year-over-year increase in sales, and February’s drop was the worst since October.
Canada’s retail sales rose for a second month in February, registering the biggest two-month gain since 2011, on increased purchases at gas stations and new car dealerships.
Sales of $39.5 billion topped estimates, rising 1.5 per cent from a year earlier.
In terms of volume, nationwide sales were little changed, suggesting the increase was due to higher prices.
