VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Members of the Block Watch program in Vancouver are getting credit for helping the cops catch a man who was breaking into cars.
Police want to draw attention to the program, hoping other people will sign up and help keep neighbourhoods safe.
Sgt. Randy Fincham says a Block Watch member recently spotted a man testing door handles on cars in the area around Kamloops and Dundas streets. “With good observation skills, patience, and a quick call to 911, a VPD dog squad and a patrol officer caught a man in the act of breaking into a car.”
Fincham says a lot of people are part of the Block Watch program, but more eyes are needed. “The program currently has approximately 594 active blocks in the City of Vancouver. There’s approximately 1,000 captains and co-captains monitoring individual neighbourhoods.”
Surrey was the first municipality in BC to adopt the Block Watch program.
