VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – They’ve been dumped by their party this week, and they’re wondering why; two ex-Conservative candidates are surprised to have been sacked over comments they made online or in newspaper editorials.
Ian Tootill and Mischa Popoff both say they were vetted by the party, which should have known enough about their background to be aware of potential controversy.
In Popoff’s case, he says the Conservatives knew he was a columnist. His criticism of the Missing Women Inquiry is among the commentary that was brought up just before he was let go.
“What did they think I was writing about? Did they think I was writing about, to use that example of the Missing Women Inquiry, do you think I would have written a column saying ‘Oh, great job?'” wonders Popoff.
He feels he revealed everything about himself while he was vetted.
“It’s like you’re naked. You’re standing before them, saying ‘Could I please stand as a candidate for your party?’ And they say, ‘Okay, thank you.’ They take the package along with a deposit and then they get back to you.”
The Conservatives have said both ex-candidates made unacceptable statements.
