District needs millions to bring service levels back up: VSB

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver School District is taking a look back at the last decade as it prepares to approve a new budget tonight.

The district says to bring service levels back to what they were at 11 years ago, it would need another $41 million. Staff say a number of costs have not been funded by the province, resulting in cuts by the school district.

However, Ken Denike is one trustee who doesn’t see the point of looking back.

“Should we not be looking forward to something that is being proposed that looks like it’s going to come into being, rather than looking back a decade at what was at that point?”

He says education has changed and the school board should be looking ahead. “It could well be that the amount required is more than $40 million to do that. But we would at least know and be planning for the future and looking at a trajectory towards the future rather than looking back.”

Next year’s budget is up for approval tonight by the School Board.
