SEATTLE, WA (NEWS1130) – Victoria’s Michael Saunders returned to Seattle’s lineup after missing 17 games with a shoulder injury and drove in a pair of runs and scored twice as the Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-2.
Saunders was injured on April 10th when he crashed into the left field wall at Safeco Field in a game against the Houston Astros. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list the next day.
It took Saunders less than an inning to make an impact as he smashed a solo homerun in his first plate appearance to open the scoring.
Baltimore took the lead in the top of the fourth inning as Matt Wieters hit a two-run shot, scoring Chris Davis.
Another British Columbia native helped put the Mariners back in front in the home half of the fourth. Trail’s Jason Bay hit his second double of the game to score Michael Morse. Jesus Montero would come home one batter later as Robert Andino drove him in, putting Seattle up 3-2.
After Brendan Ryan singled home Justin Smoak in the sixth inning, Saunders hit into a fielders’ choice, which allowed Bay to reach the plate. Saunders would then reach home on a Kyle Seager triple, to round out the scoring.
Joe Saunders was terrific on the mound for the Mariners. He allowed just four hits as he pitched a complete game for the victory. He had two strikeouts.
