One dead in Maple Ridge shooting

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS1130) – There’s been another deadly shooting outside a shopping centre in the Lower Mainland, this time in Maple Ridge.

A man was killed last night at Haney Place Mall. Police are not yet saying whether this was a targeted hit, though the man was the only person shot.

“Right now, it’s too early to tell,” says RCMP Staff Sergeant Conrad Golbeck. “The Integrated Homicide Team is doing an investigation and we’ll be getting some more information as the investigation unfolds.”

“I can confirm that he was pronounced dead at the hospital,” notes Golbeck.

Police have not released any information about the victim, any suspects, or possible gang ties.

Last night’s shooting has left Maple Ridge’s mayor with a mix of emotions, including frustration and anger.

Ernie Daykin is calling the brazen killing “highly unusual” for his community. “It’s hard not to take it personally.

He considers Maple Ridge a safe city, but he’s realizing crime doesn’t respect boundaries. “A number of the incidents that have happened in other communities, we haven’t experienced, so I guess it kind of brought it home a little bit.”

Daykin is taking comfort in the work of police, who he says are also outraged.

“As a mayor, a leader in the community, to have that kind of investment or that passion shown by those that are keeping us safe is a good thing.”

Daykin is thankful specialists like the Integrated Homicide Investigation team are on the case. Without them, he says the shooting would have taken all the resources of the local RCMP detachment.
