MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS1130) – RCMP have arrested two men after a deadly shooting at Haney Place Mall.
Police are now looking at whether there is enough evidence to charge a 26-year-old and 27-year-old who were arrested not far away from the shopping centre.
The man killed has been identified as 26-year-old Claude DeGuire.
Sgt. Peter Thiessen says there may be another person involved in the shooting. “Investigators are currently seeking a third, yet to be identified male suspect that is believed to have played a role in this homicide as well.”
“This was a targeted shooting which took place at very close range between the victim and the suspect shooter. It appears to be a drug related shooting which resulted in a homicide,” says Sergeant Peter Thiessen, acting spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. “This is another tragic example of the risks one takes when being involved in the drug trade.”
Multiple witnesses were identified and interviewed resulting in the arrests.
“Oftentimes, local citizens or witnesses have to be pressed for information. I am proud to say that the Ridge Meadows RCMP have had no shortage of persons coming forward to offer details on what they saw,” says Inspector Dave Fleugel, Operations Officer and acting detachment commander.
“This speaks volumes to how people feel about our community. It gives us the confidence to know that public safety is truly a shared responsibility and that there is confidence in our systems to get to the bottom of these types of terrible crimes,” says Fleugel.
Thiessen says given that this was the second mall shooting in Metro Vancouver in less than a week, he understands why people may be on edge.
Early-morning shoppers like Elton were rattled. “It always makes you nervous. You never know what’s going to happen. In Abbotsford, Mission, and now here? It’s getting crazy.”
