COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – The latest big American retail chain to open up in Western Canada had thrifty shoppers lining up for the launch this morning.
Target at Coquitlam Centre is one of 22 locations that opened its doors today. Julietta and Drago were the first to line up outside; they arrived at 5 a.m.
“I just wanted to be first in the store. That’s it — to line up and see what they have, what they have to offer,” said Drago.
When Target opened in Ontario last year, shoppers went crazy, emptying shelves.
President Tony Fisher says more competition is a good thing. “The consumer wins, whether it’s [lower] price points, better loyalty programs, [or better merchandise assortment.”
Target is promising to price-match its US merchandise.
The chain is aiming for 200 Canadian stores in a decade.
