FRASER VALLEY (NEWS1130) – Abbotsford has issued a flood warning for areas outside of protective dikes as water levels rise on the Fraser River.
The Mike Helmer, the city’s deputy director of emergency preparedness, says at-risk areas include the Matsqui Prairie and Glen Valley. “When we get hot temperatures, followed by rain, then we get some significant rises in river levels.
He says the Mission gauge currently reads 5.5 metres.
“The diking system is in great shape. However, in the unprotected areas, there are houses and properties outside the diking area. When they approach more like 6.5 [metres], there could be water in basements.”
The City of Port Coquitlam has also issued a statement, warning people to use extreme caution around the river.
