Snowboarder dies on Grouse Mountain

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s the first death of the ski season on one of our local mountains.
A young snowboarder has died after going missing last night. He was last seen on Grouse Mountain at around 7:30 last night.
“It’s very tragic. We found this young snowboarder deceased off of this area called Heavens Sake, which is the access road coming off the Olympic chair,” says Tim Jones with North Shore Rescue.
RCMP and mountain staff were also part of an extensive search for the young man. At first, they found his backpack and a cell phone stashed far from where they eventually found his body.
Jones says crews found him in cardiac arrest but couldn’t revive him. “We did extensive resuscitation and through talking with emergency physicians at Lions Gate we discontinued resuscitation based on the time that he was missing and that he was in cardiac arrest for quite some time.”
The 16-year-old Brazilian exchange student also wasn’t wearing a helmet when he fell and hit a tree.
Police have now contacted both his host family here and his family in Brazil.
