Squamish boy badly burned after flammable material ignites

SQUAMISH (NEWS1130) – It’s a sad reminder you need to be careful when using your fireplace. A six year old boy is in hospital with serious burns after a fire spread in a Squamish townhouse Sunday night.
Flammable material on the floor near the fireplace ignited, and the woman living in the townhouse on Government Road tried to put it out.
The boy came to investigate the commotion, and RCMP Constable Terry Gillespie says he walked through the flames, receiving third degree burns.
“He’s in stable condition. Obviously not very comfortable, but he’s conscious and stable,” says Gillespie.
Police aren’t entirely sure what the material was that caught on fire, but Gillespie says you need to be aware when using your fireplace:
“Make sure you don’t have anything flammable near the fireplace, acetone or anything like that, any flammable materials that could spread the fire out of your fireplace and into your residence,” and Gillespie adds it’s also important to get your chimney cleaned regularly, and always watch an open flame.
The woman was also treated for burns to her hands.
