Gov’t change needed to fix housing affordability: expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – An influx of new housing developments won’t bring much help in making it easier to buy or rent a home according to SFU Urban Planner Peter Hall.
“If you look across the Metro Vancouver landscape, we have these nodes of high density developments spread out all around the transit system. We should be really proud of that but that doesn’t solve the affordability problem,” he explains.
Hall says governments need to step in, in order to change the playing field. “That requires separate kinds of intervention that at the moment there doesn’t seem to be a willingness by policy makers to do that.”
He says people often think building more means prices will go down because of competition. He says we won’t see that happen though and that developers will continue to build and we will continue to be priced out.
