Tips to make sure your pet is ready for winter

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s not only people who feel the effects of cold winter weather; your pet needs a bit of protection, too.
Lori Chortyk with the SPCA says they don’t usually support dressing up pets, however, “sometimes in cold weather, particularly small dogs, it really does help to have a little bit of extra protection against the cold.”
She if you do have to leave your animal outside — even for a short time — you need to make sure they have access to shelter “that’s really well-insulated, that’s off the ground, and that provides protection from the wind, cold, and dampness.”
Chortyk adds anti-freeze is also a problem this time of year.
“Even a tablespoon of the wrong kind… can kill a cat or small dog. So, we recommend that people use propylene-based anti-freeze, which is a much safer alternative for a pet.”
She notes when there’s de-icer on the ground, you should make sure to wipe your dogs paws after a walk.
