BC’s Opposition NDP seeks to abolish Senate

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – BC’s opposition says the Senate dramatically under represents British Columbia and it is now calling on the province to support abolishing it.
Saskatchewan and Manitoba have already given this motion the thumbs up.
This will be brought forward to the legislature when it sits again in February says NDP Leader Adrian Dix. “This time I think is the particular moment for provincial legislatures to act. The Senate of Canada has always been looked at negatively by Canadians, at least in recent decades…but that is particularly true now. In the wake of the scandals that have beset the senate now.”
He says it is a source of ridicule and it contributes to disdain for Canadian democracy. “There are provinces with one senator for every 30,000 people, WE have one senator for every 700,000 people.”
Dix says Premier Christy Clark should support what he’s calling the NDP’s principled stand and vote to get rid of the Senate rather than repeatedly change positions on support for Senate reforms.
New Democrat House Leader John Horgan called the Senate a trash heap of undemocratic appointments.
