Foreign workers lodge another complaint against Tim Hortons

FERNIE (NEWS1130) – Temporary foreign workers have lodged another complaint against a Tim Hortons outlet, this time in Fernie.
“The workers are saying that they were paid overtime in their pay cheques, but when they went to the bank to cash the cheques, the boss would demand money back for the overtime, in cash,” explains Jim Sinclair with the BC Federation of Labour.
Plus, the workers, who are from the Philippines, are accusing their boss of demanding employees to pay for work permits, which should be covered by employers using the Temporary Foreign Worker program.
Sinclair says the workers have consulted lawyers.
“This is just the tip of the iceberg. We know the way the program is set up, workers can be taken advantage of and they don’t have rights. It takes extreme courage for these workers to come forward. They’re jeopardizing not just their jobs. They feel they could be deported back to their countries.”
Meanwhile, complaints against a Timmies in Dawson Creek by foreign workers are the subject of a human rights case.
The workers, from Mexico, allege they were overcharged for rent and were subjected to racial slurs.
