Online campaign details effects of BC Ferry service changes

By

GABRIOLA ISLAND (NEWS1130) – People who depend on BC Ferries want the provincial government to live up to past promises to fund the system on a stable, long-term basis.

A new online campaign is out, explaining how proposed service cuts will change their way of life.

More than dozen people are featured in the ‘I Live Here‘ vignettes that details how people on the Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast will be impacted by the planned reductions in sailings.

From seniors questioning who will help them when all the young people leave — to merchants claiming their businesses could collapse without tourists — the pitch is clear.

“I catch the 5:25 a.m. six days a week. Now I have to decide, do I have to leave, do I have to quit my job? Somewhere along the line, they forgot that this is our road.”

It was last month the provincial government said it needs to save 19 million dollars, and cutting the number of sailings and reducing things like seniors discounts beginning April 1st are part of the plan.
