VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We’re just over a week away from the end of TransLink‘s employer pass program, which means thousands will soon have to pay more to ride transit.
The Employer Pass is among a number of discounts that are coming to an end in the New Year.
While it will mean a cost increase above the rate of inflation for those who switch to a monthly pass, TransLink’s commissioner Bob Irwin says it won’t trigger a review.
He says that role only applies to short-term fares.
“That’s why FareSavers fell under my jurisdiction or why cash fares fall under my jurisdiction or day passes fall under my jurisdiction. But a monthly pass does not.”
Irwin says the change is out of his reach. “One reason why it doesn’t fit, because I can only regulate what’s known as short-term fares, not monthly fares. So again, from the provisions of the [South Coast British Columbis Transportation Authority] Act under which I do a fare review, it’s a short-term fare only.”
The end of the employer pass will affect about 25,000 employees working for 250 companies.
