VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Some retailers are getting a head start on Boxing Day by starting their sales Tuesday and Wednesday.
David Ian Gray of DIG360 Consulting says retailers are so driven to find incremental sales this year because of low growth in the past so it has almost become “Boxing Week”. He says they think consumers will spend more if offered discounts earlier.
“It’s a different trend. I think it’ll be a little risky for them to open up stores on Christmas Day just because of public backlash and our cultural desire to have that day off, but the Internet never sleeps,” he explains.
Gray says one of the trends we saw on Black Friday was that of shopping online and buying in-store and he says that will continue.
“We’ll probably see more of that on Boxing Day than we even saw on Black Friday. And again there are those out there that just love hitting the malls and the big box stores on Boxing Day with a stampede of people, but a lot of us don’t like that.”
