Oak Bay preparing for deer cull

OAK BAY (NEWS1130) – An animal rights group in BC is lobbying the mayor of Oak Bay to stop a planned deer cull for next year.
Lesley Fox with the Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals says she encountered a real-life animal tragedy in Oak Bay; a woman driving in front of her struck a baby deer, which died at the scene. “That sucked. It was awful. This is what kinda happens, it’s sort of professional, in that we work to protect animals but it becomes personal when it happens to you.”
Nils Jensen says the community known for its elderly neighbours must reduce the number of deer running wild in the streets. “Doing nothing is not an option. We can see the rising number of deer-human conflict. For us to just ignore it, in my view and the view of council, is not proper public policy.”
Oak Bay is one of several BC communities expected to target urban deer populations in the new year.
