Warm conditions mean bare local ski hills

NORTH SHORE (NEWS1130) – You may be wondering where your stellar ski season is.
Warm conditions have a lot of the local hills brown and bare right now. This time of year usually brings in about 20 per cent of Mount Seymour’s revenue, so it’s a big blow to its bottom line.
Emmalee Brunt with the mountain says they don’t have snow machines, so most of the mountain is closed — unless you’re a beginner. “Our Goldie Learning and Bear Bowl Learning areas are open, as well as tobogganing. However, the rest of the terrain on the mountain needs a bit more snow… to be open.”
She hopes things will pick up soon because the start hasn’t been this late on Mount Seymour since the 1989-1990 season. “However, in 1989-1990, we did have 17 feet of snowfall over 17 days… we’re hopeful for another January like that.”
Whistler says it’s not getting hit too badly, though it has fired up the snow-making machines. But that’s not the same at Mount Washington, where it’s too warm there to even think of adding to the resort’s 20-centimetre base.
