BC’s debt clock passes the $60-billion mark

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC’s debt has gone over $60 billion. That has the Canadian Taxpayers Federation demanding spending be cut back.

BC Director Jordan Bateman calls it extremely concerning, saying government needs to continue to find ways to increase revenue through economic growth.

“All this talk about Liquefied Natural Gas… resource projects… we need to start seeing some of this money come in. We just had an election campaign built around a debt-free BC; I think it’s important for British Columbians to know we are a long way from being debt-free,” he tells us.

“[It starts with] prioritization. The provincial government’s got to go back to the drawing board and really sharpen their pencils and make sure that evey dollar they’re borrowing is a necessary dollar.”

“The average share [of debt] now per person in BC is almost $13,000,” adds Bateman.

While there is money to cover the interest payments, Bateman says it’s not the ideal way as it weakens our dollar in the long-run.

He worries people will become numb to the debt numbers, forgetting it will be passed on to your kids.
