Extreme cold weather alert in Toronto

TORONTO (NEWS1130) – Toronto remains under an extreme cold weather alert for a second day, with temperatures expected to drop even further.

By 5 a.m. on Thursday, it was already -16 C, and it felt like -20 C with the windchill.

Later in the morning, Environment Canada expanded a windchill warning for most of the GTA to include Toronto.

The agency said temperatures have dropped to between -20 C and -30 C, but it will feel more like -30 C to -40 C overnight. People in the area are advised to cover exposed skin when heading outdoors.

There is some light snow in the forecast and the temperature will remain chilly through Friday. A warm-up is expected on the weekend, either on Saturday or Sunday.

Extreme cold weather alerts are called when Environment Canada forecasts an overnight temperature of -15 C or lower, issues a windchill warning or predicts extreme weather conditions.
