Massive morning blaze in Burnaby

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – A massive fire in south Burnaby Saturday morning.

It was in an old warehouse in an industrial area on Willard between 12 and 14 Avenues

“Thick black smoke bilowing up. You can see it clear from 10th Avenue in New Westminster,” described one caller to News1130.

Fire chief Mark Fletcher says it was a challenging blaze. “We weren’t able to attack the fire like we would want to normally because there were power lines in the front of the building, all in the back of the building was swamp and bog.”

He says it’s too early to talk about a cause.

“That’s under investigation right now. We are not really sure. It’s in the RCMP’s hands now. I believe it is arson, for a fire to be able to get going at that intensity that quickly at that time of day.”

At its height, over 2,300 BC hydro customers had their power knocked out because of the fire.
