NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS1130) – There’s still no official cause of the big blaze that destroyed half a city block in downtown New Westminster three months ago today.
Both the investigation and the clean-up continue.
New Westminster Police say they’re still working to figure out the cause of the fire that destroyed the landmark EL Lewis building; Sergeant Diana McDaniel says it takes time to go through the evidence, “including CCTV footage from surrounding businesses around the fire.”
“Also, video footage was provided to us by the public. We have witness statements, and we have all the exhibits from the scene,” she adds.
Kendra Johnston with the Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Area says life has been slowly getting back to normal. “Many of the businesses that were lost or displaced, the majority of them have re-opened.”
She tells us the city suffered a big loss, but the aftermath has been inspiring. “It was really amazing to see a community come together and support those affected.”
The city says another building will have to come down as the clean-up continues.
