Avalanche on Highway 16 near BC/Alberta border

VALEMOUNT (NEWS1130) – A massive avalanche forced the closure of Highway 16 down near the BC/Alberta border for much of the day.

It came down around 9:30 a.m. on the Shale Hill area of Mount Robson.

With 50 to 60 centimetres of snow over the last 3 days and a weak layer underneath, Bruce Greg with the Ministry of Transportation says they haven’t had a challenge like this in about 20 years. “Heavy snow was followed by heavy rain early this morning and conditions deteriorated rapidly.”

The stretch of highway reopened around 6 p.m.
