Man dies after avalanche near Valemount

By

VALEMOUNT (NEWS1130) – A snowmobiler riding in the Clemina Creek area south of Valemount, BC, was killed Saturday in an avalanche just days after a warning about back country instability from the Canadian Avalanche Centre.

RCMP got word of a distress beacon in a snowmobile area 30 kilometres off of Highway 5 just past 12:30pm. Several riders were nearby when the avalanche hit, and one person was confirmed dead after being buried.

The B-C Coroner’s Service will be waiting to recover the man’s body because crews have deemed the area too dangerous to enter. You’re being cautioned not to venture into that backcountry.
The Canadian Avalanche Centre warned Thursday there’s a high risk of slides because sun and warm temperatures are destabilizing snowpacks.

The age of the victim and where he’s from haven’t yet been released.
