VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The entrepreneurs behind the new “Free Torts” campaign have been told to stop selling their t-shirts by the Vancouver Canucks organization which didn’t find the humour in the local effort.
Trevor Lepage smelled opportunity when Head Coach John Tortorella was suspended for 15 days after trying to get into the Flames dressing room following a line brawl last Saturday.
“We sold about 90 t-shirts at about $20 each and to as far as Prince Edward Island and as far south as Savannah, Georgia. One dollar from each t-shirt goes to the Tortorella Family Foundation in New York where they rescue dogs.”
But then the call came from the club to stop what they were doing. “If we didn’t stop selling these shirts immediately and if we didn’t take the website down immediately then they would refer this case to the [head] NHL office.”
He says the team didn’t want them to make a profit off the likeness of Tortorella. “They, in his words, had a lot of guys that like to make an example of people like us,” he adds.
Lepage explains they weren’t trying to get in on a ‘get rich quick’ scheme; they were just trying to have some fun.
